SUSTAIN LABS - IN YEAR ONE
A BRIEF REPORT
Sustain Labs was launched in 2017 as a company based in India and France for transforming large organisations towards becoming socially and environmentally responsible. It brings together leading academics to solve these organisational challenges.
In March 2017, Sustain Labs struck a pedagogic linkage with Sciences-po Paris founding a Master’s course on 'Creating Sustainable Businesses and Policies'. This 6 week course is offered in the spring semester every year in Paris and offers its students the possibility to work at the organisations within Sustain Labs’ portfolio.
In November 2017, Sustain Labs was declared as a company officially supported by the Institut Francais India (IFI) which is the French government wing for scientific and academic exchange. IFI hosts Sustain Labs as a dedicated tab on its website.
“We become an integral part of every organisation in our portfolio, helping them work through challenges that are important in the long term for the organisation as much as for the organisation’s stakeholders. These challenges can be diverse - ensuring financial sustainability, helping them thrive without eroding nature’s resources, business diversification, brand positioning, or placing social responsibility within their business model.” says founder and CEO Miniya Chatterji. “We are also excited to build India’s first self-sustaining buildings… this is essentially an off-grid building made using recycled material. It is a concept known as ‘earthship’ that is popular in Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, which we bring to India.” she adds.
At the end of the first year of the company’s operations, Sustain Labs’ portfolio consists of 3 organisations: Anant National University, Jindal Steel & Power Ltd., and Cyber India.
First, at Anant National University in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Sustain Labs is helping transform a design, architecture, and urban planning state owned university in to becoming one that is India’s first sustainable design and architecture private university. “This partnership will strengthen our efforts to make sustainability an integral part of our coursework and culture. AnantU students will benefit from the expertise of Dr. Miniya Chatterji in the classroom and in their projects,” said Nidhi Goyal, Associate Dean - External Engagement, Anant National University.
Second, at the USD 3.5 billion business conglomerate Jindal Steel & Power, Sustain Labs created a powerful platform for public dialogue on issues important to the company and its stakeholders. Nation building is at the core of Jindal Steel & Power’s business, and so during 2017-18 through the medium of print media and large public congregations involving art, dialogue, and live performances, Sustain Labs organised several public discussions around bold issues that affect justice and democracy in India.
Third, Cyber India is a think tank based out of India and the United States. With Cyber India, Sustain Labs Paris is partnering to create a legal and technology driven solution for organisations impacted by impending new data privacy obligations in India. According to Anil Antony, Executive Director India at Cyber India, “Our collaboration with Sustain Labs is aimed to create knowledge and learning resources related to data privacy and protection, befitting a digital age where data has become the predominant raw material driving our economy as well as our society.”
Sustain Labs established its India office in Gurgaon in India in 2017, while the launch of its office in Paris is scheduled for 2019.
